The original home of the NBMAA shop was named The Shop in the Alcove and it was located in a small space off the dining room of the Grace Judd Landers house, a turn-of-the-century mansion which held the museum's collection. The shop was eventually moved to the library of the house when the focus became a museum shop rather than a gift shop. It was staffed entirely by volunteers who worked as managers, buyers and sales personnel.
When the museum expanded in 2006, the shop expanded as well, being placed prominently off the reception area and doubling in size. More space was available for books, cards, reproductions, gift items and children's merchandise. Its reputation spread as a place to buy something special and soon we had a loyal customer base. Today the NBMAA shop is a bright, inviting spot, beckoning people to come in to browse, and perhaps buy that necessary item or whimsical gift for someone. You'll not only be satisfied with your purchase, you'll be supporting the museum and its collection.
